Tancream: the ultimate safe way to tan

Built on innovation and a passion for healthy living, Tancream is a revolution in the self-tanning industry. After co-founder Gillian Robson was diagnosed with melanoma, she sought a solution that would keep her skin safe and simplify her beauty regime.

Gillian soon discovered that no such product was available. She teamed up with York-based business development specialist Katy Foxcroft to bring the idea to market, and Tancream was born.

The skincare challenge

Gillian and Katy knew their product would have to meet a strict set of requirements. It would need to provide a high sun protection factor, whilst promoting a gradual bronzing effect and nourishing the skin.

They were led to Dr Jack Ferguson BSC PhD, an independent cosmetics consultant. As a specialist in sun protection and anti-ageing skincare, he worked alongside skincare formulation expert Jo Warren BSC Hons.

Why self-tan and SPF had never been tried before

Based on Gillian’s recommendations for skin cancer patients, the formula would need to offer a sun protection factor of 50. The reason no dermatology experts had ever attempted this comes down to the chemistry.

Quite simply, the core ingredients of self-tanning lotions have an incompatible pH (acidity/alkalinity level) with SPF products. This led to an intensive two-year research period, with the aim of creating a product that not only balanced these levels, but was easy to apply.

The end result

Rome wasn’t built in a day, but it was all worth it. The product was a hit, and was stocked in three retailers after its first production run.

UVB and UVA protection

The patent-pending formula offers SPF 50 and Ultra UVA 5-star protection. SPF refers to sun protection factor, which is a measure of how well a product can protect users against the sun’s UVB rays. UVB rays can cause sunburn and skin discoloration, but are not as powerful as UVA rays.

A 5-star UVA rating provides maximum protection against UVA rays, the leading cause of skin cancer as well as wrinkles. These rays are more dangerous as we often cannot feel the damage they are doing to our skin. They can also penetrate deeper than UVB rays, including through glass.

A gradual tan with colour correction

Tancream works gradually thanks to its self-tan accelerating agents and bronzing tints. This helps to smooth out any areas of discoloration on the skin, perhaps caused by sunburn or ageing. With a non-streaking, fragrance free formula that’s easy to apply, it creates an even film with a long-lasting, healthy glow.

Anti-ageing and antioxidants

With its sun protection properties, Tancream protects against premature wrinkles and dry skin. Enriched with antioxidants, it naturally slows cell damage caused by external factors like the sun. Not only will it make you look great, you’ll feel fabulous too.

Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Tancream UV Protection

86% of skin cancer is preventable with adequate sun protection.

If there was a cream that could prevent breast or prostate cancer… would you wear it?

This month is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, a month where we stop in our tracks and consider whether we are savvy in the ways that we protect our skin from the sun?

If we’re honest, life is so busy that looking after our skin from the sun can go amiss, but with these simple tips you can keep your skin safe:

  1. Check for any changes of spots or moles on your skin, specifically look for changes in size colour or shape
  2. Wear at least SPF 30 to protect you against damaging UV rays. The sun not only transmits UVA (which ages your skin) but also UVB (which burns your skin leaving it vulnerable). By wearing a high sun protection factor you are protecting it from harmful rays which are present even through cloud and not just when the sun is shining bright
  3. Remember your lips! Find a lip balm which has an SPF to it
  4. Stay away from sun beds!

With rates of skin cancer increasing faster than any other form of cancer, now is the time to look after your skin!

Gillian (our Founder) discovered a suspicious looking mole on the back of her leg just four years ago. Her GP fast tracked her on to the appropriate medical specialists who saw to remove the mole swiftly based on it being cancerous.

This experience motivated Gillian and co-Founder Katy Foxcroft to create a brand-new beauty routine for men and women around the globe today.

Heading abroad this summer?

Brits are even more likely to be sunburnt abroad, with almost half of people who have been abroad in the last twelve months getting sunburnt whilst away (46 per cent).

Skin damage caused by the sun and its harmful rays can happen every day of the year, so be sensible and introduce an SPF to your morning beauty routine.

Tancream, the World’s First SPF50 with Natural Gradual Tan, allows you to enjoy both looking and feeling great and it has anti-ageing and anti-oxidant properties giving protection and perfection! Shop your summer essential now at tancream.co.uk.

Next Stop – Hydration Station!

It's important to exfoliate

We have been nesting for some 9 weeks now (the big wigs at the met office tell us winter began on 21st December) and it certainly feels like 9 whole weeks doesn’t it?

Despite our hunkering-down nature at this time of year, our skin care can go awry!

We ask ourselves, why is it that we nourish our hair and skin all summer-long, yet when it comes to an equally taxing time of year we forget to?

Colder temperatures outside and the heating going hammer and tong inside can make for dry, itchy and irritated skin.

With news of colder climes about to hit the UK, we reveal exactly what you can do to keep our skin looking and feeling great through till Springtime!

It's important to exfoliate

1. Stay hydrated on the inside and out! Mayo Clinic state we should be drinking about 2.7 litres a day to stay healthy. Not only does drinking water flush out toxins – which then shows on our skin, it has also been known to boost your mood and is supposed to be good for weight loss too. Hand us a bottle of Evian! Here are our friends over at mindbodygreen’s 10 reasons why you should drink more water.

The sun's rays can be even stronger in winter

2. Wear SPF self-tan and instant bronzer daily to tackle pale, dry and sun-exposed skin. We seem to think that the sun’s rays in the winter aren’t as strong as in the summer. Wrong. In fact, they can be even stronger! Wearing an SPF every day is a really great way to prevent sun damage and perhaps worse. Huffington Post wrote a great article on this some 5 years ago, though old it has the main reasons why you ought to wear SPF daily.

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate

3. Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate! It sounds counter productive doesn’t it? As we get older the process of cell regeneration slows down, meaning your skin can start to look dull and dry. By exfoliating once or twice a week, you can keep your skin looking healthy.

We’re determined to keep our skin in tip top condition until the warmer climes hit our island, so until then stay happy and healthy in your skin, and most of all stay sun safe!

The Six Week Morning Challenge

If you’re anything like us, we’re willing for spring to arrive early, though after last week’s bad news from the Ground Hog, it looks like we have six more weeks until those first daffies appear! So, what can you do to kick start your morning for the next six weeks? Here are our top 6 tips to help get you from your winter to spring self!

Week 1 – Get active!

Coach and mentor, Emma Stirk starts every day with stretching. Her alarm goes off at 5 to 5 and then she has a whole hour’s “me time” before her youngest daughter wakes.
Just 10 minutes of stretching every day can release endorphins and boost your mood. Do whatever is comfortable for you to do, standing up or on the floor on a chair or on your bed… stretch the inside leg. Stretch to touch your toes, stretch to get your head on your knee. In 6 weeks, with continued daily stretching you’ll feel so much better!

Week 2 – Hello Sunshine

Even on the deepest darkest grey days of winter, the sun’s rays (UVA rays) which are at the same level in June as they are in December or in New York as they are in the Sahara are dangerous. Due to their longer wave length they can penetrate deeper in to our skin. So, wear your SPF daily to help prevent sun damage, premature ageing and if you use Tancream… of course give you that stunning natural glow!

Week 3 – Write a to do list for the day ahead

Whether you use a good old’ fashioned notebook and pen or like to use an iPhone to do list app, make lists to help keep your mind clear and keep you organised. Read more about what successful people do every morning.

Week 4 – Smile

Bear with us on this one… Studies have shown that when we smile it tricks are brains in to thinking we are happy. Simple isn’t it? Plus, we are more attractive when we smile! Double whammy.

Week 5 – Hot water and lemon

This must be one of our favourite beauty hacks. Ditch the coffee and get in to the habit of cleansing your system with a hot water and lemon to help flush out toxins, balance your pH, aid digestion, boost your immune system, and you got it, the vitamin C helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes, purging toxins from the blood which helps keep skin clear as well.

Week 6 – Breath properly

Our days can be manic, and we can end up being pulled from pillar to post! Our bodies are a lot of the time, running on adrenaline which isn’t good for us. It means our breathing never fully deepens. Here’s how to breath properly

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. (Although you can do this exercise while sitting or standing, it’s easiest to practice by lying down at first.)
  2. Place your hands on your abdomen.
  3. Breathe in through your nose, counting to four. Picture a balloon in your belly that you’re inflating with the air you are inhaling. Your hands should rise as your abdomen fills with air.
  4. Hold the breath for a few seconds.
  5. Exhale slowly through your mouth, counting to four. Picture letting the air out of your belly balloon. Your hands should go down as your abdomen deflates.

That’s it! You did it, well done! You finished our six-week challenge, big pat on the back!
